Chapter 16 - The Architect of the TrapBefore Grant could process the horrifying reality of the situation, the overhead intercom speakers hissed to life with a burst of static, followed by a slow, mocking round of applause echoing through the sterile chamber.

"Magnificent," a smooth, cultured voice resonated through the speakers. "Mr. Mercer, and the legendary operative who thought she could outsmart the Vanguard. I must admit, your persistence is almost admirable. Stupid, but admirable."
Grant glared up at the overhead security camera in the corner of the room, his voice shaking with a rage that bordered on madness. "Show yourself, you coward! Let my daughter go, and I swear I'll flay you alive!"
"Ah, Mr. Mercer always speaks in the language of corporate ultimatums," the voice replied smoothly. On the main monitor, the screen flickered, replacing the diagnostic data with the live feed of a sleek, leather-lined command bunker somewhere deep beneath the facility.
A man sat comfortably in an ergonomic leather chair, sipping espresso from a delicate porcelain cup. He had silver-rimmed glasses, impeccably groomed grey hair, and a smile that didn't reach his cold, dead eyes.
"Director Vance?" Grant stared at the screen in utter shock. Not Richard Vance—the man on the screen was Richard’s older brother, Victor Vance, the true mastermind who had operated from the shadows while Richard took the public fall.
"Richard was always the impatient one," Victor smiled, setting his espresso cup down on a glass table. "He wanted money, influence, corporate power. Small dreams for small men. But the Vanguard? We deal in geopolitical leverage. And your brilliant wife, Mr. Mercer, stumbled onto a weapons contract that could destabilize three Western governments."
Mara stepped in front of the camera, her hand resting firmly on her sidearm. "You lost, Victor. The local authorities and international intelligence networks already have these coordinates. You have twenty minutes before this entire mountain is swarming with strike teams."
May you like
Victor chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair. "Let them come. By the time they blast through the outer perimeter, this entire facility—along with you, your husband, and your precious little daughter—will be vaporized by a self-destruct sequence that cannot be aborted."
The screen blinked off, leaving behind a deafening silence broken only by the countdown timer now flashing in bold red digits on the main console: 18:45... 18:44...
