Chapter 2 - The Contract of ShadowsGrant locked the heavy oak door of his study, the sound of the deadbolt sliding home feeling like the trigger of a loaded weapon. The mahogany desk was cluttered with unread financial reports and cold coffee cups, but his eyes were fixed entirely on Nora, who stood rigidly by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling, barricaded estate grounds.

"Talk," Grant demanded, dropping the silver music box onto the blotter. "Names. Locations. Now."
"My real name isn't Nora Ellis," she began, turning to face him with a chilling composure that belied her youth. "And the agency didn't send me here by accident. I hacked their placement algorithm three weeks ago. I needed inside access to the Mercer fortress, and your security clearance is the only one high enough to access the black-budget archives from 2021."
Grant narrowed his eyes, stepping closer. "You're a operative? For whom?"
"For Mara," Nora whispered, stepping into the pale pool of light cast by the desk lamp. "She's alive, Grant. But she isn't free. And she couldn't come back for you, because the moment she stepped foot outside her cage, you and Sophie would have been eliminated."
The words hit him like a physical blow. The coldness in his chest morphed into a white-hot fury. For five years, he had lived as a shell of a man, pouring millions into a fruitless search, while the architects of his nightmare lurked in the shadows.

"Who has her?" Grant growled, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of the desk.
"Someone sitting inside your own board of directors," Nora replied, pulling a micro-drive from the lining of her uniform cuff and dropping it onto the desk. "And the man who signed the order to make your wife vanish? His name is right there on line forty-two of your company's deepest merger files. Your greatest enemy isn't outside these gates, Mr. Mercer. He's the man sharing your scotch on Tuesdays."
