Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the AgencyGrant whirled around, his hand instinctively reaching for the heavy brass paperweight on the desk. "Who's there?"

The wind whipped the curtains inward, bringing a rush of cold autumn air into the room. Standing on the balcony, silhouetted against the brilliant amber glow of the full moon, was a figure draped in a dark tactical cloak. The hood was pulled low, shadowing their features entirely.

"You really thought it was that easy, Grant?" a voice murmured—not Nora's voice, but a chilling, synthesized whisper that seemed to echo from all directions at once. "The syndicate wasn't just Richard. Richard was a middle manager. A distraction."

Grant stepped forward, his jaw tight. "Show your face. You have nowhere to run; the estate perimeter is locked down."

The figure chuckled softly, a dry, metallic sound. "Your perimeter was designed by men on payrolls I controlled ten years before you ever made your first billion. We didn't come here to kill you, Grant. Killing you is bad for business. We came to collect."

"Collect what?" Grant demanded, his eyes scanning every shadow for an exit route.

"The asset," the figure replied simply. "Mara knows too much. And you... you were foolish enough to bring her back into the light."

Before Grant could lunge toward the balcony, a blinding flash of light erupted from the courtyard below. The sound of a silenced gunshot cracked through the night, followed immediately by the shattering of glass from Sophie’s bedroom down the hall.
