Chapter 22 - The Sanctuary Beneath the PinesThe estate in Maine loomed out of the coastal fog like a fortress of dark stone and ancient timber, perched dramatically upon jagged granite cliffs where the surf beat a relentless, rhythmic war against the shore.

Sophie woke up as Grant lifted her into his arms, blinking her heavy dark eyes against the warm glow of the chandelier. She looked around the familiar, high-ceilinged hallway, her small fingers reaching out to touch the wainscoting. "Is this home, Daddy?"
"This is home, sweetheart," Grant whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "And nobody is ever going to take you away from here again. I promise you that."
Mara led them through the sprawling corridors toward the private family wing, her tactical boots clicking sharply against the polished oak floorboards. Every room smelled faintly of lavender and old cedar—the exact olfactory memory Grant had clung to like a drowning man for half a decade. Yet tonight, the house didn't feel like a mausoleum of ghosts. It felt like a staging ground.
While Mara tucked Sophie into her bed—singing the true, unpolished version of the lullaby with a quiet, fierce tenderness that brought a rare tear to Grant’s eye—Grant descended into the lower-level war room. The massive wall-mounted monitors hummed to life at his touch, casting a pale green digital light across his face. He plugged Mara's micro-film cartridge into the master decryption terminal.
Lines of cascading code, encrypted directories, and classified financial ledgers immediately flooded the primary screen. Names, Swiss bank account numbers, encrypted satellite coordinates, and operational dossiers scrolled past in a dizzying cascade. Grant’s eyes scanned the top-tier targets—the ultimate members of the council who had ordered his wife's disappearance and his daughter's abduction. At the apex of the organizational chart sat a single name with a redacted profile icon: DIRECTOR ELIAS VOSS.
The heavy oak door of the war room clicked open. Mara stepped inside, her silhouette sharp against the hallway light. She walked over to the console, staring up at the name glowing on the screen with a look of absolute, unmitigated fury.

"Elias Voss," Mara murmured, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides. "The current Deputy Director of National Intelligence. He operates out of a fortified underground command center beneath the Potomac in Virginia. He thinks he's untouchable because he writes the executive orders that protect him."
Grant stood up slowly, walking around the console until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his wife. "Then we don't play by their rules, Mara. We don't wait for congressional hearings or federal indictments that will get buried under red tape. We take the war directly to his doorstep."
