Chapter 1 - The Trap is SetThe rain outside the penthouse window beat a steady, relentless rhythm against the glass, matching the furious thrum of my own pulse. Just thirty minutes had passed since I sent that encrypted message to my private security team. Phase Two had officially begun.

Catherine sat rigid on the edge of the velvet sofa, rocking little Penelope gently. The baby stirred, whimpering softly in her sleep, exhausted from a life spent hiding in the dark.

"Samuel, are you sure about this?" Catherine whispered, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and lingering disbelief. "Your mother... Daria Kincaid doesn't lose. She owns half the judges in this city, and half the board members at Kincaid Enterprises."

I walked over, kneeling beside her, and gently touched my thumb to the fading bruise on her cheek. A cold, black fury surged through my chest—not the blind rage of two years ago, but a sharp, precise, surgical hatred.

"She hasn't won anything," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "For two years, she thought she was the puppet master. She made me wear black. She made me sit at the head of a lonely table. She thought my spirit was broken. Tonight, we show her what a broken man does when he realizes he has nothing left to lose."

My phone vibrated in my palm. It was a text from Marcus, my lead investigator: Dr. Weston has been secured. He's ready to talk about the falsified dental records.

"I have to go to the board dinner," I told Catherine, standing up and straightening my tie. "Daria expects me there. If I'm late, she'll send people to check on me. Stay here. The building is locked down on a biometric scan only my fingerprint and my private iris scan can bypass. You are safe."

She grabbed my sleeve, her fingers trembling. "Be careful, Samuel. Please."

"Don't worry," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead and another to my daughter's soft hair. "My mother taught me everything I know about ambition. Tonight, I graduate."
