Chapter 8 - The Shadow BoardI stared at the glowing screen, the blood draining from my face so quickly that the warm room suddenly felt freezing cold.

"Samuel?" Catherine noticed my sudden stiffness, her voice dropping with concern. "What is it? What's wrong?"

"Nothing," I lied instantly, forcing my features back into a calm expression as I locked the phone screen and slipped it into my pocket. "Just... closing out some final emails from the legal team. Don't worry about it."

She looked at me skeptically, knowing me far too well to be easily fooled, but she nodded slowly, turning her attention back to soothing Penelope, who was beginning to drift back to sleep.

I stood up and walked silently to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking down at the rainy streets of the city below.

Daria was behind bars, yes. The public thought the war was won. But looking at that mysterious figure in the photograph, I realized a terrifying truth: Daria was merely the CEO of our family's darkness. There was a board of directors pulling strings from the shadows—people who had helped orchestrate Catherine's kidnapping, people who viewed human lives as mere collateral damage on a balance sheet.

Which meant I had just painted a massive target on my own back—and worse, on Catherine and Penelope.
