Chapter 10 - The Storm Before the DawnDawn broke over the city, piercing through the heavy gray clouds with a brilliant, golden beam of light that painted the penthouse living room in warm hues.

Catherine walked out of the bedroom, dressed in fresh clothes I had had delivered overnight, looking rested for the first time in two years. She walked up behind me, wrapping her arms softly around my waist and resting her head against my back.
"Are you ready for today?" she whispered. "The media is going to be a circus. The police want our formal statements."
I turned around, wrapping my arms securely around both her and Penelope, who was awake now and giggling, tugging playfully at my tie.
"Let them come," I smiled, pressing a deep, loving kiss to Catherine's lips. "We’ve survived the worst night of our lives. From here on out, nobody touches my family."
She smiled back, her eyes shining with hope and a love that had weathered fire and grave.
As we stood together by the window, watching the city wake up to a brand-new day, my phone buzzed quietly in my pocket. I didn't take it out. I didn't need to look at the screen.
