Chapter 13 - The Unwelcome GuestI stood in the center of the spacious living room, weapon raised, eyes fixed on the private elevator doors at the end of the hall.

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open smoothly.

Standing inside was Julian Vance. But he wasn't wearing his usual sharp, tailored business suit. He wore a dark tactical turtleneck, and in his right hand, he held a sleek, suppressed firearm with terrifying casualness.

"I have to hand it to you, Samuel," Julian said smoothly, stepping out into the living room as if he owned the place. "You played the grieving widower card so well for two years that even Daria bought it. But you should have stopped while you were ahead."

"You're trespassing, Julian," I said, keeping the barrel of my gun locked dead-center on his chest. "The federal police are already looking for you. You walk out that door right now, or you don't walk out at all."

Julian chuckled softly, a cold, mocking sound that echoed off the high glass windows.

"Police? Samuel, the police answer to the people who fund their pensions," Julian sneered, taking a slow step forward. "Do you really think a few low-level federal agents can touch the Shadow Board? Your mother was just a figurehead. We built Kincaid Enterprises out of blood and dirt long before you were born. And we aren't about to let a resurrected wife and a bastard baby hand our empire over to outsiders."

"Catherine and Penelope are my family," I snarled, my finger tightening on the trigger. "And anyone who touches them dies."

Julian's smile vanished, replaced by a flash of pure, venomous hatred. "Then let's see how well you protect them from the grave!"
