Chapter 16 - THE DAWN OF RECKONINGThe first rays of pale autumn sunlight began to creep over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and burning gold. Inside the grand study, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Adrian and Sophie sat side by side at the mahogany desk. Resting right in the center was the blank transfer contract Elena had demanded, alongside the fake dossier she had presented the night before.
At precisely 6:00 AM, the heavy double doors swung open.
Elena strode into the room, looking impossibly chic in a tailored white pantsuit, her lips curved into a triumphant, victorious smirk. Behind her stood two armed mercenaries, keeping watch at the doorway.
"Good morning, Mr. Vance. I trust you spent a sleepless night making the right decision," Elena purred, walking slowly toward the desk. She looked down at the desk and saw the papers lying flat. "Ah, I see wisdom has finally prevailed."
Adrian didn't look up immediately. He slowly picked up the golden fountain pen, rolling it between his fingers. "You think you’ve won everything, Elena. Just like Vanessa. Just like Julian."
"Don't compare me to those two incompetent fools," Elena snapped, her smile fading into irritation as she reached down to grab the document. "They let emotions cloud their judgment. I only care about numbers. Now, sign the transfer line."
"I'll sign it," Adrian said calmly, looking her straight in the eyes. "Under one condition. You read the final clause out loud so my daughter knows what she's giving up."
Elena rolled her eyes in annoyance. "You are melodramatic, Adrian. Fine." She snatched the paper up, her eyes scanning the bottom paragraph. "I, Adrian Vance, hereby relinquish all voting shares of the Vanguard-Vance Syndicate to..."
She paused. Her eyes suddenly darted back to the top of the page, where a small, handwritten watermark stamp had been added by Adrian just an hour before.

Elena’s face instantly drained of all color. "What... what is this stamp? This is an old state magistrate seal... this code is..."
"Invalid," a deep, booming voice echoed from behind her.
