Chapter 20 - THE FINAL PROMISELater that evening, after the guests had departed and the estate had grown quiet once again, Sophie walked out onto the back terrace alone to watch the stars.
The night air was crisp and clear. There were no hidden threats in the dark, no footsteps in the hallway, and no fear in her heart.
She opened the small gift box Martha had given her earlier. Inside was a delicate, custom-engraved silver locket. Inside the locket was a tiny, faded photograph of her late mother, smiling brightly.
Engraved on the back of the locket were words that brought instant tears to Sophie's eyes:
“Strength is not the absence of fear, but the courage to rise above it.”
Sophie gently snapped the locket closed, clutching it tightly against her chest as a soft breeze rustled through the garden trees. She took a deep breath, looking up at the endless expanse of the night sky, ready for whatever future lay ahead.
