Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN TRUST DEEDThree days after Vanessa’s dramatic eviction, the shockwaves had barely begun to settle. Adrian and Sophie were sitting in the home study, trying to piece together a sense of normalcy, when family lawyer Marcus Vance walked in, looking grave.
"Adrian, Sophie. I need you to see this," Marcus said, placing a thick leather-bound folio on the mahogany desk. "While auditing Vanessa’s administrative access to the family trust, we found a series of corporate document transfers executed last month."
Sophie frowned, leaning forward. "What kind of transfers?"
Marcus opened the folio, pointing to a signature at the bottom of a high-stakes corporate agreement. "It appears Vanessa wasn’t acting alone. She had a legal proxy—someone inside our primary competitor, Vanguard Holdings."
Adrian’s breath hitched. Vanguard Holdings was run by Julian Vance—no relation to Marcus, but a ruthless corporate rival Adrian had battled in court for over a decade.
"Julian?" Adrian muttered, the pieces violently clicking together in his mind. "Vanessa was working for Julian all along? But why?"
"It goes deeper than corporate espionage, Mr. Vance," Marcus said grimly, turning the page. "Look at the beneficiary clause amended to Sophie’s medical trust. If Sophie had died from the anaphylactic shock at the engagement party, her entire primary share of the estate—including your controlling voting rights in the company—wouldn't have reverted to you. Due to a rider inserted six months ago, it would have defaulted to a secondary trustee: Vanessa’s secret holding company."
The room spun around Sophie. "She planned it six months ago? Every smile, every hug, every time she baked cookies for me... it was all a countdown?"

Adrian slammed his fist onto the desk, cracking the wood. "She wasn't just trying to inherit my wealth—she was trying to hand my entire empire over to my worst enemy on a silver platter."
"And that," a cold, unfamiliar voice echoed from the doorway, "is precisely why you're already too late."
