Chapter 2 - THE FROZEN VAULTThe words hung in the air, echoing off the sterile walls of the nursery.

Twins.

"No," I gasped, stumbling backward until the edge of the rocking chair caught the back of my knees. "That's impossible. The doctors told me... they told me my baby girl died during emergency labor. They handed me an empty blanket. They said her heart stopped."

"Doctors in public hospitals are easy to buy, Hunter, or easy to scare," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously smooth as he closed the distance between us. He knelt down, bringing his face level with mine, though I was seated. His gaze burned into me with a desperate, terrifying intensity. "Especially when a multi-billion-dollar syndicate needs to hide a catastrophic vulnerability."

"I don't understand," I sobbed, clutching my head. "Why would anyone take my child? Why switch them?"

"Think about it," Lorenzo growled, gripping the arms of the rocking chair. "The night my wife was assassinated by the Colombo family, Sophia was rushed to St. Jude's while bleeding out. They performed an emergency C-section while under active threat. My enemies wanted our bloodline wiped out completely. If the underworld knew Sophia had twins—heirs to the Rossi empire—every killer from here to Palermo would have hunted them down before they drew their first breath."

Marcus stepped forward, adding the missing pieces to the puzzle. "The medical team we hired to protect Sophia switched the children to protect them. They placed one twin—Leo—in our heavily fortified compound under heavy guard. But the other twin..." Marcus looked directly at me. "They needed a safe, untraceable civilian shield. They needed someone poor, quiet, and completely off the grid to raise the second heir where no one would ever look."

"And they chose me?" I screamed, the grief and betrayal boiling over into pure rage. "You people destroyed my life! You stole my child, made me believe she was dead, and then hired me as a maid to clean your floors?!"

"We didn't hire you," Lorenzo corrected softly.

I froze. "What?"

"You didn't apply for this job through the agency, Hunter," Lorenzo said, standing up to his full, imposing height. "Your employment file was flagged and dropped onto my desk by a ghost—an old doctor who vanished forty-eight hours later. You weren't hired as a maid. You were drawn here by biology. Nature found a way to bring you back to your blood."

Before I could process the insanity of his words, a piercing, deafening alarm shrieked through the mansion.

Red Alert.

The overhead lights flickered, dying instantly before the emergency backup generators kicked in, bathing the nursery in an eerie, pulsing red glow.

Marcus’s hand drew his pistol in a flash. "Boss! The perimeter gates on the north side have been breached. Heavy ordnance. It's the Colombos."
