Chapter 3 - THE SIEGE OF ROSSI MANOR"Get the safe room ready," Lorenzo commanded, his voice shifting instantly into that of a cold, calculating warlord. The grief and shock vanished, replaced by a terrifying, lethal composure. He scooped Leo out of his crib with surprising gentleness, cradling the sleeping infant against his chest with one arm while drawing a sleek, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol with the other.

"Hunter," Lorenzo ordered, looking down at me. "Stay behind me. Do not make a sound."

"My baby—where is my other baby?" I demanded, panic overriding my fear of the armed syndicate boss. "If Leo has a twin, where is she?!"

"If the Colombos breached the compound, finding out where the second twin is hidden is a luxury we only get if we survive the next ten minutes," Lorenzo snapped, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward a hidden panel behind the nursery's mahogany bookshelf.

Marcus punched a rapid sequence into a biometric keypad disguised as a wall sconce. The heavy bookshelf hissed, sliding back to reveal a dark, reinforced steel tunnel equipped with emergency lighting and military-grade communication gear.

Bang! Bang-bang-bang!

The distinct, terrifying pop of automatic gunfire echoed from the main foyer downstairs, followed by the shattering of expensive stained glass and the shouts of dying men. The war had come to the doorstep, and we were trapped in the middle of it.

"Move!" Lorenzo shoved me into the tunnel, stepping in right behind us before Marcus slammed the heavy steel door shut, sealing the vault from the inside.

We scrambled down a narrow flight of concrete stairs that led deep into the subterranean bowels of the mansion. The air grew cool and damp, smelling of old earth and gunsmoke.

"How did they find us?" Marcus muttered, tapping furiously on a tactical tablet that displayed live security feeds from around the estate. "The perimeter codes were changed yesterday. There's a mole."

"We'll hunt the mole down later," Lorenzo said coldly, keeping one arm securely locked around Leo, who whimpered softly at the noise but remained asleep, sustained by the milk he had finally taken from me. Lorenzo turned his dark eyes toward me. "Can you shoot?"

I stared at him in horror. "What? No! I'm a maid!"

"You're a mother protecting her children," Lorenzo corrected, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a compact Glock 19. He checked the magazine with a practiced click, then pressed the grip into my trembling hands. "Hold it with both hands. If anyone comes through that door who isn't me or Marcus, you pull the trigger until the slide locks back. Do you understand?"

My fingers curled around the cold steel. Every muscle in my body shook, not just from terror, but from the realization that my quiet, ordinary life was dead and buried. I wasn't Hunter the maid anymore. I was tied to the most dangerous man in New York, and my stolen child was out there somewhere in the crossfire.
