The autumn sun was shining brightly over Manhattan, casting a golden glow across the courthouse steps. Sirens wailed in the distance as federal marshals led Daniel Vance out through a side exit, his wrists bound in heavy steel cuffs, his expensive suit wrinkled and ruined.

Lucia skipped down the stone steps, holding tightly to Vittorio’s left hand and Serena’s right hand, chattering happily about what they were going to have for dinner that evening.

“Do you think we can make pancakes?” Lucia asked, looking up at Vittorio. “Real ones, with chocolate chips?”

“If you and your mother can make them, I’ll eat every single one,” Vittorio promised.

“You didn’t have to do all of that in court,” Serena said softly as they reached the waiting black SUV.

“I didn't do it for the court,” Vittorio replied, opening the car door for them both. He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur meant only for her ears. “I did it for my family. All three of you.”
