Chapter 9 - The VerdictThe courtroom settled into a tense hush as Judge Sterling adjusted her glasses, peering down from the elevated bench at the assembled parties.

“We are here regarding Docket 4492-B, custody proceedings for Lucia Valente,” Judge Sterling announced, reading from the case file. “Counsel for the plaintiff, you may present your opening statement.”

Daniel’s attorney stood up, launching into a polished, venomous speech. He painted Serena as an itinerant, unstable worker, citing missed rent payments from two years ago, temporary shelter stays, and an alleged lack of financial security. He presented doctored bank statements and false affidavits, building an airtight case designed to strip Serena of her parental rights entirely.

Serena felt a cold knot twist in her stomach. She looked at Lucia, who was sitting quietly between her and Vittorio, coloring a small picture on a notepad.

What if they take her? What if Daniel wins?

Vittorio slid his hand across the table, gently covering Serena’s trembling fingers. His touch was warm, steady, and anchoring. Trust me, his dark eyes said without words.

“Thank you, Counsel,” Judge Sterling said, her face expressionless as she turned toward the defense table. “Ms. Valente, or your legal representative, you may respond.”

Vittorio stood up.

He didn’t hire a family law attorney. He represented himself, walking slowly to the center of the well, holding a single manila folder.

“Your Honor,” Vittorio began, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the courtroom. “The plaintiff, Daniel Vance, has presented a narrative of financial instability regarding Ms. Valente. However, he omitted a few critical details regarding his own financial portfolio—and his criminal enterprises.”

Daniel’s attorney leaped to his feet. “Objection, Your Honor! Relevance! This is a family custody hearing, not a financial audit!”

“Overruled, Counsel,” Judge Sterling said sharply, her eyes fixed on Vittorio. “Continue, Mr. Rinaldi.”

Vittorio opened the manila folder and placed three documents on the clerk’s podium.

“Three years ago, Daniel Vance acted as the legal counsel for a shell corporation that systematically drained the Rinaldi estate’s philanthropic trusts while forging my late wife’s signature on fraudulent transfer documents,” Vittorio stated calmly, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence of the courtroom.

Daniel turned chalk-white. He gripped the edge of the table so hard his fingers turned blue.

“Furthermore,” Vittorio continued, turning the page, “over the past forty-eight hours, federal banking regulators, acting on evidence provided by my security team, have frozen all of Mr. Vance’s domestic and offshore accounts. Funds totaling over four point two million dollars—stolen from my family and laundered through fictitious child support shell companies—have been recovered.”

Gasping echoes rippled through the gallery.

“That’s a lie! Fabricated evidence!” Daniel shouted, losing his composure entirely as he stumbled out of his seat. “He’s a billionaire, he can buy any document he wants! Your Honor, don't listen to him!”

Judge Sterling slammed her gavel down twice. “Silence, Mr. Vance! Sit down before I have you held in contempt!”

Vittorio turned to face Serena, then looked back up at the judge. “As for Ms. Valente’s housing and financial stability, she is currently employed under a binding, long-term executive contract with Rinaldi Holdings, complete with full housing, medical benefits, and complete security. She is an exemplary mother, a brilliant caregiver, and a victim of Mr. Vance’s financial manipulation.”

Vittorio stepped back, looking directly at Daniel, who was now shaking with sheer panic.

“I move for immediate dismissal of the plaintiff’s custody petition,” Vittorio said smoothly, “and request an immediate bench warrant for Mr. Vance’s arrest on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate extortion.”
