Chapter 11 - The Secret Behind the Steel Door

The acrid scent of gunpowder faded quickly into the rich, polished aroma of old oak and burning cedar as the federal agents secured the perimeter of the Lake Geneva library. Eleanor Montgomery’s shrill, frantic protests echoed off the vaulted ceilings as two heavily armed marshals hoisted her to her feet, snapping heavy steel cuffs around her wrists. She didn’t go quietly; she thrashed like a trapped animal, her ancient eyes locked onto me with a venomous fury that could have melted glass.

"You think this is a checkmate, Katherine!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as they dragged her toward the shattered double doors. "The trust! The true foundation! Without the master key, you own nothing more than a pile of bricks and debt! You’ll never find it! Never!"

I didn't blink. I stood tall beside the mahogany desk, keeping one arm securely wrapped around Liam, Noah, and Caleb, who were still clutching my silk robe in their small, trembling fists. Ethan stood near the threshold, his head hung low in utter humiliation, flanked by federal officers who were ready to haul him away to a federal penitentiary for financial fraud and conspiracy.

"Take them away," I said, my voice cutting through the chaos with absolute, freezing authority.

The heavy oak doors swung shut, sealing out the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers outside. The silence that rushed back into the room was heavy, thick with the weight of decades of buried Montgomery secrets.

Victoria, who had been huddled near the fireplace wrapped in her woolen blanket, slowly stood up. Her hands were still shaking, but the terror in her gray eyes had been replaced by a fierce, burning resolve. She walked over to the desk, her gaze fixed on the leather journal of Arthur Montgomery that lay open on the blotter.

"She mentioned a master key," Victoria whispered, her voice barely audible. "And the true foundation."

I looked down at the old journal, specifically at the last page where the jagged handwriting of the patriarch detailed the hidden vault. My mind raced. Julian Vance stepped forward from the shadow of the mezzanine stairs, his sleeves rolled up, a thoughtful frown etched across his face.

"Eleanor was desperate," Julian noted, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "People only panic like that when you’re standing directly on top of their final hiding spot. She didn’t just want to kill us; she wanted to protect whatever was buried beneath this room."

"Beneath this room?" Caleb piped up, his wide gray eyes blinking sleepily as he pointed a small finger downward toward the Persian rug. "Like a dragon’s cave?"

I smiled softly, kissing the top of Caleb's dark, wavy hair. "Something like that, baby boy. Now, go upstairs with Captain Miller and get some sleep. Mama has a little homework to finish."

Once the boys were safely tucked away in the east wing under armed guard, Victoria, Julian, and I began the search. We didn't have to look long. Using Arthur’s journal as a blueprint, Julian discovered a subtle hydraulic seam beneath the heavy mahogany desk. With a sharp click and a deep mechanical groan, a hidden panel in the wooden floorboards slid open, revealing a steep, stone spiral staircase descending into absolute darkness.

A rush of cold, damp air billowed upward, carrying the scent of old paper, iron, and forgotten time.

"Shall we see what our dear departed grandfather left us?" I asked, picking up a heavy brass candelabra from the mantle.

"Lead the way, boss," Julian muttered, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his pocket.
