Chapter 18 - Shadows Fade Away

The autumn chill gave way to a crisp, beautiful winter across Chicago. The city streets were blanketed in pristine white snow, but inside our penthouse and the Lake Geneva estate, life was warm, bright, and filled with endless laughter.

Ethan Montgomery sat in a maximum-security federal correctional facility in southern Illinois, wearing an orange jumpsuit, spending his days scrubbing cafeteria floors and learning what hard labor actually felt like. His mother, Eleanor, had been moved to a private medical facility due to declining health, her mind trapped in a cage of bitter memories and lost power, completely forgotten by the society she had once ruled.

The Board of Seven had been dismantled, its remaining members scattering across the globe to avoid federal indictment, leaving the corporate landscape of Chicago open to a new era of ethical, forward-thinking enterprise led by Vance Global Tech.

I had proven every single person wrong.

I wasn't a charity case. I wasn't a footnote in the Montgomery family history.

I was the author of my own destiny.

"Mama! Come on! The snow is super deep!"

Liam’s voice broke through my thoughts as I stood by the grand living room window of the Lake Geneva estate, watching thick snowflakes drift down over the garden.

I turned around to see all three boys bundled up in thick winter parkas, red scarves, and woolen beanies, holding wooden sleds ready for action.

"Alright, alright! I'm coming!" I laughed, abandoning my laptop on the sofa and rushing over to pull on my heavy winter boots and gloves.

As I stepped out onto the snowy lawn, the crisp winter air hit my face, sharp and invigorating. The boys immediately charged at me, pelting me with soft snowballs while laughing uncontrollably.

"Ambush!" Caleb yelled, throwing a snowball that missed my head entirely and hit Julian Vance, who was walking up the driveway carrying a stack of holiday philanthropic proposals.

Julian stopped, brushing a dusting of snow off his tailored overcoat, raising an eyebrow with a playful smirk. "Is that so? Well, federal partners do not take unprovoked attacks lying down."

Julian scooped up a massive handful of snow and packed it tightly, aiming directly for Liam, who shrieked and hid behind my legs.

I laughed, catching my breath in the frosty air, looking down at my three boys whose bright gray eyes shone with pure, untadulterated joy.

They didn't carry the cold, ruthless poison of the old Montgomery bloodline. They carried my fire. My resilience. My heart.
