Chapter 7 - A New Empire

A month later, the Lake Geneva estate looked entirely different.

Gone were the cold, sterile white roses and the intimidating aura of old-money snobbery. The grand gates were now open to local community groups, and the expansive gardens echoed with the joyful laughter of children.

I had converted the east wing into a modern philanthropic foundation supporting single mothers trying to build businesses from scratch—providing the exact kind of lifeline I wish I had received five years ago when I walked out into the snow with nothing but a dream and a heartbeat.

"Mama! Look! I caught a big one!"

Liam came running across the emerald lawn, holding a small plastic fishing net with a frantic goldfish splashing inside from the estate's newly stocked ornamental pond. Noah and Caleb sprinted right behind him, covered in mud and laughing uncontrollably.

I laughed, setting my laptop down on the patio table. "Put it back in the water, Noah! It belongs with its family!"

"Okay!" shouted Noah, racing back toward the pond.

Julian Vance walked out onto the patio, carrying a stack of revised corporate merger documents and two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade. He handed me one, smiling as he watched the boys play.

"You know, for a hostile takeover, this turned out to be quite a lovely neighborhood," Julian remarked, sitting down in the chair across from me.

"It’s not just a neighborhood, Julian," I said, taking a sip of the cold lemonade and looking out over the sprawling estate that now bore my name on the deeds. "It’s a kingdom. And this time, we wrote the constitution."

My phone buzzed on the table. It was an alert from my executive assistant: Senator Hastings has officially resigned following campaign finance investigations tied to the Montgomery default.

I smiled, turning the phone face down.

The past was buried deep beneath the gravel driveway, where it belonged.
