Chapter 32 - The Gathering Storm

By noon, my three sons—Liam, Noah, and Caleb—had gathered in my private conference room. They were now established men in their mid-twenties, holding key executive positions within the foundation and tech sectors. Their sharp gray eyes and unwavering focus mirrored my own, but their demeanor was grounded in the modern ethics we had spent decades building.

"Veritas Holdings," Caleb murmured, scrolling through the legal manifest on his tablet. "This isn't just an ordinary trust fund, Mama. It’s a controlling stakeholder account holding assets across international shipping lanes, media syndicates, and real estate spanning three continents."

Noah leaned against the glass partition, frowning thoughtfully. "If Arthur set this up as a contingency plan, he must have known Eleanor and Ethan would eventually destroy the family from the inside out. He wanted someone with actual backbone to take the keys."

"Which means someone else out there knows about it," Liam added, his fingers flying across the auxiliary console to run a trace on the proxy servers. "The ping didn't just route itself from Washington. Someone woke up the archive server. Someone is trying to force a claim against Veritas Holdings before our statutory window closes at midnight."

I walked over to the head of the conference table, placing both hands flat on the glass surface. My gaze swept across my sons.

"Who is trying to claim it?" I asked.

Liam’s fingers stopped. He tapped a final keystroke, and a facial recognition overlay appeared on the central monitor, extracted from the security logs of the federal archive facility in D.C.

The face on the screen made my breath catch in my throat.

It wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Ethan.

It was a young man—perhaps twenty-eight years old—possessing the exact same sharp jawline, dark wavy hair, and piercing gray eyes as my sons. But there was something chillingly familiar about the cold, predatory smirk playing across his lips.

"Who is that?" Noah asked, stepping closer to the screen.

"That," I said quietly, the memories of a life left behind rushing back like a tidal wave, "is Julian Montgomery Jr.—Ethan’s younger half-brother, born to a woman Eleanor paid to hide away in Europe before I even met Ethan."
