Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITThe penthouse atop the Monteverde Tower was dark, save for the blue glow of multiple computer monitors illuminating Alejandro’s face. It was 3:00 AM, but sleep was a foreign concept. On his desk sat a thick, leather-bound folder—his father’s private, unredacted journals, recovered from a secure safety deposit box that afternoon.

For years, Alejandro had believed his father, Viktor Monteverde, was a self-made titan who built his empire through sheer grit and ruthless business acumen. But as Alejandro’s eyes scanned the handwritten pages, dated twenty-five years ago, the foundation of his entire existence began to crumble.
“The partnership with the Ruiz family is sealed,” Viktor’s sharp handwriting read. “Their biomedical patents are revolutionary. By absorbing their lab under the guise of a bailout, the Monteverde name secures its dominance for the next century. I only pray Thomas Ruiz never discovers the true nature of the acquisition clause.”
Alejandro’s breath hitched. Ruiz.
Elena’s maiden name.
He frantically turned the pages, his hands shaking. Thomas Ruiz—Elena’s grandfather—hadn’t just been a minor scientist. He had been the brilliant mind behind the pharmaceutical tech that made the Monteverde fortune possible. And Viktor Monteverde had systematically ruined him, forcing him into bankruptcy before a suspicious laboratory fire wiped out the rest of the family's assets.
Elena wasn't just a nurse he had met by chance in an ICU ward. She was the granddaughter of the man his father had utterly destroyed. Destiny, or a cruel cosmic irony, had brought them together, and Alejandro’s own paranoia and Isabella’s sabotage had driven her away before he ever knew the truth.
Suddenly, his private line buzzed. It was Marcus, his head of security and personal investigator.
"Mr. Monteverde," Marcus’s voice sounded tense, muffled by the sound of heavy rain on the other end. "You asked me to look into the digital footprint of the emails Isabella used to frame Miss Ruiz. I decrypted the root server."
"And?" Alejandro demanded, gripping the edge of the glass desk so hard his knuckles turned white.
"It wasn't just Isabella, sir. The original metadata points to a secondary sender inside our corporate network. Someone from twenty years ago. Someone who has been monitoring Miss Ruiz’s medical career long before you ever walked into that ICU."
A cold sweat broke out across Alejandro’s neck. "Who?"
"Your uncle, Julian Monteverde. He’s been quietly buying up the remaining debt of the Ruiz estate. Mr. Monteverde... he knows about the child. And according to our security sweeps, a high-frequency tracking beacon was just activated near Miss Ruiz’s current location."

Alejandro stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the marble floor. "Track her phone. Now."
"She’s turning it off, sir. The signal just died."
