Chapter 5 - THE STANDOFFInside the darkened apartment, the air was thick with tension.

Julian Monteverde stepped closer, the barrel of his gun steady. "Put your hands where I can see them, Elena. Don't be a hero. Your grandfather made the mistake of fighting my brother, and look where it got him—ashes and a forgotten grave."
Elena’s heart pounded like a jackhammer, but beneath the terror, a fierce, primal rage ignited. She thought of her grandfather. She thought of the struggles she had endured, working double shifts while pregnant, hiding in fear, just to keep her child safe. And now, this monster had walked into her home to steal her flesh and blood.
"You think you’ve won," Elena said, her voice steadying, defying the trembling in her limbs. She slowly shifted her weight, positioning herself directly in front of the hallway leading to the nursery. "You think because you have a gun, you control everything. Just like Alejandro did."
Julian chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Alejandro is a boy playing with corporate toys. He doesn't understand the bloodline, Elena. But you and I? We understand survival."
At that exact second, from inside the nursery, Gabriel let out a sudden, piercing wail.
Julian’s eyes flickered toward the doorway for a fraction of a second—a fatal distraction.
It was all the opening Elena needed. With a fierce cry, she grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the kitchen counter behind her and hurled it with all her might directly at Julian’s head.
The pan caught him squarely across the shoulder and temple, throwing his aim off. The gun went off with a deafening roar, the bullet shattering the kitchen window and embedding itself into the wall.
"Bitch!" Julian snarled, stumbling back, clutching his bleeding temple. He swung the barrel of the gun back toward her, his face contorted with murderous rage. "I’ll put you down right here—"
Before he could pull the trigger, the front door was kicked off its hinges with an explosive crash.
Wood splintered everywhere. A dark, imposing figure surged through the smoke and rain, moving with terrifying speed.
Alejandro.
Before Julian could pivot his weapon, Alejandro slammed into him like a freight train, tackling his uncle straight through the drywall of the living room. The two men crashed onto the floor in a flurry of punches, grunts, and shattering glass.
"Alejandro! Stop!" Elena screamed, rushing out of the kitchen, pulling Gabriel’s crying form out of the crib and shielding him in her arms.
The fight was brutal, short, and vicious. Alejandro, fueled by adrenaline, guilt, and raw protective fury, pinned Julian to the floor, wrapping his hands around his uncle's collar and slamming his head against the hardwood until Julian went limp, unconscious.
Heavy breathing echoing in the wrecked room, Alejandro stood up slowly. His knuckles were bloody, his black shirt torn at the shoulder. He turned around slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Elena.
She stood in the center of the debris, clutching their son tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with a mix of shock, fear, and lingering defiance.
"Elena..." Alejandro whispered, taking a cautious step forward, his hands raised palms-up to show he meant no harm. "Are you... are you both alright?"
Elena didn't lower her guard. She looked at the blood on his hands, then at the unconscious man on the floor, and finally into Alejandro’s tormented eyes.
"You found me," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"I had to," Alejandro said, his voice cracking with an emotion he had spent a lifetime trying to bury. He dropped to one knee, ignoring the broken glass cutting into his trousers, looking up at her like a supplicant before an altar. "I know everything now, Elena. About your grandfather. About what my family did to yours. And about why Julian came here."
May you like
Elena stared down at him, the weight of the past forty-eight hours crashing down upon her. "You knew?"
"No," he said, shaking his head, tears finally spilling over. "I didn't know. But I swear to you on my life, on our son’s life... I will spend every breath I have, every dime I own, and every second of my existence making it right. I don't want control, Elena. I don't want a transaction. I want my family."
