Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE GAMBITTwenty-four hours later, the abandoned customs warehouse at the city docks was shrouded in a thick, rolling sea fog.

Inside, a single halogen work light cast a harsh beam over a metal folding table. On the table sat a locked titanium briefcase.
Alejandro stood in the shadows near the back of the warehouse, his hand resting inside his jacket. Clara was stationed in the rafters with a secure digital uplink to federal cyber-crimes command.
Outside, the crunch of gravel signaled the arrival of a sleek black sedan.
The heavy sliding door of the warehouse rolled open with a screech. Isabella stepped inside, her designer heels clicking sharply against the concrete. Behind her walked Dr. Vance, looking nervous, clutching a encrypted hard drive against his chest.
"I see you came alone, Alejandro," Isabella smiled, her voice dripping with triumph as she walked toward the metal table. She looked around the cavernous, empty warehouse. "Smart boy. I knew you’d realize you couldn't beat us."
"You have the hard drive?" Alejandro asked, his voice deadpan, stepping out from the shadows into the halo of the halogen light.
"Of course we do," Dr. Vance said nervously, stepping up beside Isabella. "Fifty million in an escrow account, fully cleared, and we hand over the keys. No police, no lawyers, just a clean break."
Isabella reached out, tapping the titanium briefcase. "Open it."
Alejandro didn't move. Instead, a slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"You know, Isabella," Alejandro said softly, "you always were brilliant at scheming. But you made one fatal mistake."
Isabella frowned, her triumphant smirk faltering slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"You assumed I was the only one who learned from my father's mistakes," Alejandro said.
Suddenly, the overhead shadows erupted into blinding white light.
Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear swarmed down from the catwalks and surged through the open doors, their weapons raised.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!"
Dr. Vance screamed in panic, dropping the hard drive to the floor as a federal agent tackled him into the concrete.
Isabella froze, her face turning chalk-white. She spun around toward the exit, only to find her path blocked by two armed agents. She turned back to Alejandro, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You set me up," she hissed.
"No," a cool, calm voice echoed from the shadows near the entrance.
Elena stepped out into the light, holding Gabriel safely wrapped in her arms, flanked by two private security guards. She looked at Isabella not with anger, but with profound, pitying detachment.

"We set a mirror," Elena said softly, stopping a few feet away. "You spent your whole life trying to destroy others because you couldn't stand the thought of not being in control. But your greed made you sloppy."
Isabella lunged forward in a desperate, last-ditch effort, screaming obscenities, but the federal agents grabbed her arms, forcing her wrists into steel handcuffs. As they dragged her away into the foggy night, her shrieks echoed off the metal walls until they faded into silence.
