Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING AT THE BOARDROOMThree days later, the mahogany boardroom of the Monteverde Global headquarters felt like a war zone.

The long table, usually occupied by silent, submissive board members, was surrounded by federal investigators, corporate auditors, and armed security guards. At the head of the table sat Alejandro, wearing a charcoal-gray suit, his expression carved from granite. To his right sat Clara, acting as corporate witness and forensic accountant.

And standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city below, was Elena. She wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress, holding Gabriel quietly in her arms. She wasn't hiding anymore. She was part of the room, part of the legacy.

Bound in zip-ties at the center of the room sat Julian Monteverde, flanked by two federal marshals, staring at the floor in sullen defeat.

"The audit is complete, Mr. Monteverde," the lead federal investigator announced, placing a thick stack of documents in front of Alejandro. "Through shell companies and forged medical trusts, Julian Monteverde systematically embezzled over forty million dollars from the Ruiz-Monteverde joint biomedical accounts over the last two decades. The warrants for asset seizure are fully active."

Julian lifted his head, a bitter, venomous smirk twisting his lips. "You think you’ve won, nephew? Look at her. Look at the nurse. The moment she legally marries into this family—if she even has the stomach for it—she inherits every lawsuit, every debt, and every target currently painted on our backs. The Monteverde name is poison."

Alejandro didn't flinch. He stood up slowly, leaning over the table, looking down at his uncle with absolute, freezing contempt.

"The Monteverde name was poisoned the day my father and you decided that human lives were just line items on a balance sheet," Alejandro said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "That ends today. We are liquidating the legacy holdings. We are transferring fifty percent of the biomedical patent portfolio back into a newly established Ruiz Foundation, managed independently by Elena."

Julian’s smirk vanished. "You’re... you’re giving away half the empire?"

"I’m giving back what was stolen," Alejandro corrected flatly. "Take him away."

As the marshals hauled Julian out of the boardroom, the heavy doors clicked shut, leaving a profound, cleansing silence in the room.

Alejandro dismissed the board members with a wave of his hand. Within seconds, the vast room emptied, leaving only Alejandro, Elena, and their son.

Alejandro walked slowly around the mahogany table. He stopped a few feet from Elena, his eyes searching her face, looking for any trace of the fear or anger that had defined their parting at the hospital.

"You didn't have to give away half the empire," Elena said softly, breaking the silence.

"It was never mine to begin with," Alejandro replied, his voice softening into a gentle, vulnerable hum. He reached out, his hand hovering inches from Gabriel’s tiny blanket before looking up into Elena’s eyes. "May I...?"

Elena looked at him for a long, quiet moment. She saw the exhaustion in his face, the sincerity in his eyes, and the total dismantling of the armor he had worn for a lifetime. Slowly, carefully, she shifted Gabriel slightly, allowing Alejandro to support the baby’s head with his large, steady hands.

Alejandro’s breath caught. Holding his son for the very first time, a tear slipped down his cheek, landing softly on Gabriel’s blue cap.

May you like

"He has your eyes," Alejandro whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so pure it felt sacred.

"And your stubbornness," Elena added, a faint, genuine smile finally gracing her lips.
