Chapter 10 - The Final Knock

The evening gala celebrating the grand reopening of the Moretti Foundation was a glittering success. Ambassadors, philanthropists, federal judges, and high-ranking officials mingled beneath the crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom, celebrating the dawn of a new, transparent corporate era.
Sophia stood on the balcony overlooking the pristine courtyard, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown that commanded the room's attention without ever shouting for it. Lorenzo walked up behind her, gently draping a cashmere shawl over her bare shoulders, pulling her close against his chest.
"You look breathtaking," Lorenzo whispered against her ear, kissing her cheek tenderly.
"Thank you, Lorenzo," Sophia smiled, leaning back into his embrace, feeling a profound sense of peace she had never thought possible. "For everything."
Suddenly, the ambient music in the ballroom hitched. A sharp, high-pitched feedback squeal cut through the room’s cheerful murmur.
On the massive projection screen above the stage, where a celebratory slideshow of the foundation's new projects was playing, the images abruptly vanished. In their place, a single, high-definition video feed blinked to life, broadcasting in real time from the estate's front gates.
The ballroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
On the screen, a lone figure stood outside the open wrought-iron gates, illuminated by the flashing blue and red lights of a parked police cruiser. The figure wore a tailored black coat and a silver porcelain mask shaped like a smiling theater tragedy.
In their gloved hand, the unknown caller held a small, familiar bronze key—identical to the one Sophia had found in the chapel months ago.
Through the outdoor intercom speakers, the masked figure's voice echoed across the entire estate, smooth, synthetic, and dripping with chilling amusement:

"Did you really think the board was just a local chapter, Lorenzo? The head of the snake never sits in the room you can see. We let you burn the branches so we could prune the tree. Enjoy your little party, Sophia. Because tonight... we collect our interest."
On the screen, the masked figure slowly raised their left hand, holding up a polaroid photograph of Lily sleeping peacefully in her upstairs bedroom, timestamped 11:42 PM.
