Chapter 13 - The Widow's Vengeance

With explosive, calculated violence, Sophia yanked the heavy brass lamp cord hard, pulling a massive marble bust of a Renaissance philosopher tumbling off its pedestal directly onto Viktor’s shoulder.

CRASH!

Viktor screamed in agony as the heavy stone crushed his collarbone, sending him sprawling backward across the Persian rug. The tactical knife flew from his hand, clattering harmlessly against the baseboard.

"Now, Lorenzo! Now!" Sophia screamed.

From the doorway, Lorenzo burst into the room like a runaway freight train. He didn't aim for Viktor; instead, he sprinted straight toward the chair, slicing through Lily’s ropes with a tactical pocketknife and scooping the sobbing little girl into his arms in a single fluid motion.

"I've got you, baby. Daddy's got you," Lorenzo panted, shielding Lily’s face against his chest as he dived behind a heavy oak armoire for cover.

Viktor snarled, writhing in pain on the floor, his hand scrambling for a backup pistol tucked inside his shoulder holster. "Kill them! Kill them all!"

From the shadows of the suite's private balcony, two hidden syndicate operatives dropped into the room, assault rifles raised and safety switches clicked off.

Before they could acquire their targets, a deafening volley of suppressed gunfire erupted from the hallway. Captain Elena Vance stepped through the broken doorway, her assault rifle smoking, her tactical training neutralizing both operatives with two simultaneous, precise headshots. The mercenaries dropped like lead weights, hitting the floor without a sound.

Viktor stared in horror at his fallen men, clutching his shattered shoulder as blood soaked through his bespoke charcoal suit. He looked up to find Sophia standing directly over him, her face shadowed, her pistol pointed squarely between his eyes.

"You said people like me are invisible," Sophia whispered, her voice like shards of broken glass sliding across ice. "You thought we were just furniture to be polished, used, and thrown away."

Viktor sneered, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth. "You think... killing me changes anything? The council... has a dozen successors... waiting in Geneva..."

"Let them come," Sophia said coldly. "Because I'm done cleaning up your messes."

She didn't pull the trigger on his heart; instead, she fired a single, clean shot through his right hand, pinning his palm to the hardwood floor through his expensive leather glove. Viktor let out an ear-piercing shriek of agony that echoed through the empty east wing.

Elena stepped forward, kicking Viktor's backup pistol away and slapping heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists with ruthless efficiency. "Well, that's one way to handle human resources," Elena muttered, hauling the screaming chairman to his feet. "Federal marshals are securing the perimeter. The entire European board is being rounded up as we speak. It's truly over, Sophia."
