Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Machine

Inside the damp, overgrown ruins of the estate's Victorian greenhouse, the air smelled of damp potting soil and rusted iron. Moonlight filtered brokenly through shattered glass panes overhead, casting eerie, skeletal shadows across rows of dead ferns.

Sophia knelt before an old rusted utility panel hidden beneath a rusted potting bench. Her fingers, nimble from years of sorting delicate antiques and repairing torn linens, flew across a hidden manual keypad, punching in a twelve-digit override code her late husband had left memorized in a nursery rhyme.

Click.

A section of the stone floor hissed and slid sideways, revealing a subterranean terminal glowing with the eerie blue light of an active mainframe.

"This is it," Sophia breathed, sliding down the metal ladder into the underground bunker. Lorenzo followed closely, pulling Lily down safely behind him.

The room was a high-tech surveillance nexus. Dozens of monitors flickered with real-time feeds from cameras hidden all over the Moretti estate—including angles Lorenzo himself didn't know existed, feeding directly into an encrypted offshore server. Even more damning were the financial spreadsheets glowing on the primary monitor: millions of dollars funneled from Moretti Global Shipping accounts into front companies managed by Marcus Vance and Valentina.

"She wasn't just skimming profits," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave as he scrolled through the file directory, his face pale under the monitor's blue glow. "She was using my shipping fleet to transport black-market cargo—weapons, counterfeit currency, and displaced children sold to high-paying international syndicates."

"Including Lily," Sophia added, her voice trembling with barely contained fury as she pointed to a specific sub-folder labeled Project Chrysalis. "Look at the acquisition list. Children from single-parent households working on estate properties. They target us because they think nobody will look for us when we disappear."

Lorenzo gripped the edge of the metal console so hard his knuckles turned white. The realization that his own home had been a breeding ground for human trafficking under his very nose made him physically sick. "I am going to burn their entire empire to the ground. Every single person involved—from Valentina to the board members—will spend the rest of their lives behind bars."

"You won't live long enough to file the paperwork, Lorenzo," a cool, modulated voice echoed from the top of the ladder.

Lorenzo and Sophia spun around. Standing at the top of the ladder, silhouetted against the broken glass ceiling, was Marcus Vance. In his hand, he held a laser-sighted assault rifle aimed directly down at them, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries.

"Marcus," Lorenzo snarled, stepping protectively in front of Sophia and Lily. "You're dead men walking. The entire server is backing up to an encrypted federal cloud server right now. The moment you pull that trigger, the keys to your entire syndicate go public."

Vance chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Let it upload, Lorenzo. Do you honestly think the Department of Justice doesn't have a price tag? Men like us don't go to prison. We simply get reassigned. But you... you're about to suffer a tragic greenhouse gas leak."

Vance raised his rifle, his finger tightening on the trigger. Sophia closed her eyes, pulling Lily tightly against her chest, whispering a silent prayer into her hair.

Suddenly, the red laser dot on Lorenzo's chest flickered and vanished.

A sharp, metallic thunk echoed from above, followed instantly by the wet, heavy thud of a body collapsing against the metal ladder.
