Chapter 18 - The Ghost of the Council

As the distant wail of emergency sirens finally pierced the evening air, a lone figure stepped out from the treeline near the vineyard. The figure was cloaked in a heavy black trench coat, holding a secure satellite terminal that flickered with a green verification light.

It was a woman. As she stepped into the illumination of the burning ruins, her face was revealed—scars lining her jaw, her eyes cold as winter steel. It was General Catherine Vance, Marcus’s and Elena’s mother, and the true, untouchable head of the global syndicate's military wing.

"Impressive, Mrs. Hale," Catherine’s voice echoed across the lawn, amplified by a small handheld speaker. She raised a heavy-duty sidearm, pointing it squarely at Lorenzo. "You burned my son's playground. You dismantled my corporate board. But you forgot one simple rule of the syndicate: the military industrial complex never loses a war."

Elena scrambled to her feet, leveling her rifle at her own mother. "Drop the weapon, Mother! It's over! The entire federal grid is locking down your assets!"

Catherine didn't even blink. She looked at her daughter with utter contempt. "You think a few federal warrants frighten me, Elena? The government is just a leasing agency for people like us. When I pull this trigger, Lorenzo dies, the girl vanishes into the black market, and you and Sophia spend the rest of your lives running from ghosts."

Catherine’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Sophia didn't flinch. Instead, she slowly raised her right hand, holding up a small, blinking satellite transmitter she had salvaged from the server room before the explosion.

"You might want to check your satellite link, General," Sophia said coolly.

Catherine frowned, glancing down at her terminal. The green verification light had turned a solid, mocking red.

"What did you do?" Catherine snarled.

"I didn't destroy the quantum drive, General. I uploaded it," Sophia smiled, her voice cutting through the crackle of the flames like a razor. "Every military contractor, every illegal offshore weapons shipment, and every coordinate of your black-ops staging grounds is currently broadcasting directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and every major news network across the globe. Your own drones are already turning around to target your position."

Catherine’s face froze in absolute horror. Overhead, the sound of heavy jet turbines split the night sky. Three unbadged military interceptor jets screamed over the estate canopy, their targeting lasers locking directly onto Catherine’s position.
