Chapter 16 - The Trojan Horse

The silence was shattered by a high-pitched, metallic screech as the heavy security shutters of the east wing slammed down automatically, sealing the manor like a tomb. Sophia grabbed her Beretta from the desk holster, her heart pounding a heavy, rhythmic cadence against her ribs.

"Lorenzo, take Lily to the panic room behind the library," Sophia commanded, her tone leaving zero room for argument. "Now."

"I'm not leaving you, Sophia," Lorenzo snapped, stepping forward with a heavy tactical shotgun he had pulled from the armory rack. "We fight this together, or not at all."

"You aren't fighting a corporate board this time, Lorenzo," Elena interrupted, slamming a fresh magazine into her assault rifle with a sharp metallic click. "Look at the drone feed. That's not a commercial unit. That's a military-grade EMP-dropper designed by the Department of Defense's black-ops division. Someone inside the federal government is trying to clean house—starting with us."

Suddenly, the reinforced oak doors of the security hub shuddered under a massive, concussive blast. Shrapnel rained down as the electronic lock was blown apart by a directional shape-charge. Through the billow of acrid smoke, a squad of heavily armored operatives poured into the room. They wore no badges, no insignias, and carried suppressed HK416 rifles with laser sights painting the walls in eerie green geometry.

"Down!" Elena screamed, tackling Lorenzo and Lily behind the heavy steel control console as a hail of silenced gunfire chewed the concrete walls to powder.

Sophia didn't hesitate. Rolling across the floor, she fired three rapid, precise shots. The lead operative staggered backward, his ceramic body armor absorbing the impact, but the sheer force knocked him off balance into the path of Elena’s return fire.

"We're pinned!" Lorenzo yelled over the deafening roar of automatic gunfire, checking his weapon's ammo counter. "There's too many of them!"

"Not if we burn the bridge," Sophia said, her eyes locking onto the master override switch for the estate's underground gas lines.
