Chapter 17 - Fire in the Foundation

With a burst of adrenaline, Sophia vaulted over the console, sliding across the blood-slicked floor straight toward the main terminal bay. Bullets zipped past her ears, clipping her sleeve and sending a shower of sparks flying from the steel cabinets inches from her face.

She slammed her palm down on the red manual override valve, twisting it open with all her might.

Hiiiiissss—

The thick, pungent odor of natural gas flooded the lower subterranean corridors instantly. Sophia pulled a Zippo lighter from her pocket—a keepsake left behind by her late husband—and flipped the lid open with her thumb.

"Sophia, what are you doing?!" Lorenzo screamed, spotting her through the crossfire haze. "The entire east wing will go up!"

"Only the part that's rotten," Sophia called back, her gaze fierce and unyielding. She looked at the advancing operatives, then down at the floor grate leading directly to the old utility tunnels.

As the lead mercenary raised his rifle to fire point-blank at her, Sophia flicked the Zippo wheel, ignited the flame, and dropped it straight down the floor grate.

The reaction was instantaneous. A deep, subterranean roar echoed beneath the estate like an awakening dragon. A wall of blue and orange fire erupted upward through the vents, engulfing the tactical operatives in a blinding flash of concussive heat.

"Move! Move! Move!" Elena yelled, scooping Lily into her arms while grabbing Lorenzo by the collar, dragging them both backward through the emergency blast doors just as the entire control room console blew outward in a magnificent fireball.

They tumbled out onto the lawn just as the eastern wing of the grand manor collapsed inward with a thunderous, earth-shaking crash, sending a massive plume of black smoke billowing into the evening sky.

Coughing and covered in soot, they lay panting on the dew-kissed grass. Lily buried her face in Lorenzo’s shoulder, weeping softly, while Sophia stood tall amidst the smoking ruins, watching the flames consume the last vestige of the estate's dark past.
