Chapter 3 - The Vineyard Vault

The autumn wind whipped through the sprawling Moretti vineyards, carrying the scent of crushed grapes and impending rain. Sophia led Lorenzo and Lily through the gnarled rows of cabernet vines, utilizing the natural canopy to shield themselves from the sweeping searchlights of the black SUVs patrolling the main drive.

Valentina, meanwhile, was having a complete psychological unraveling in the master bedroom of the grand villa. Her meticulously crafted facade—the poised, philanthropic socialite engaged to one of the richest men in Europe—lay in ruins. Her designer makeup was streaked with desperate tears as she furiously packed diamonds, passports, and Swiss bearer bonds into an alligator-skin Hermès bag.

"How could they find the chapel vault?" Valentina shrieked, throwing a diamond tennis bracelet across the room. It shattered against the antique vanity mirror. "That key was locked in my safe! Unless..."

A horrifying realization dawned on her. The quiet, pathetic housekeeper. The woman she had slapped across the face just an hour ago for dusting the library out of turn. Sophia hadn't just been cleaning; she had been hunting.

Before Valentina could zip her bag, the bedroom door creaked open. Standing in the doorway was not Lorenzo, but a man with cold, dead eyes and a tailored suit that reeked of sea salt and high-stakes smuggling. It was Marcus Vance, Valentina's primary handler and the hidden linchpin of the Mediterranean syndicate.

"You failed, Valentina," Vance said softly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. His voice carried no anger, only a chilling, bureaucratic disappointment. "The board gave you complete control over the domestic perimeter to ensure the Moretti merger went through smoothly. Instead, your petty sadism toward a servant has brought an entire federal-level audit to our doorstep."

"Marcus, please!" Valentina dropped to her knees, clutching at his Italian leather shoes. "It was just a servant! I can fix this! Lorenzo doesn't know about the syndicate's core operations, only the shipping routes! We can blame it all on the girl—on Sophia and her bastard child!"

Vance looked down at her with clinical detachment. He reached into his coat, pulled out a gold-plated fountain pen, and uncapped it slowly.

"The board doesn't like loose ends, Valentina. And right now, you are the loosest thread in the entire tapestry," Vance murmured. He motioned with his head, and two massive shadow operatives stepped out from the walk-in closet behind him, holding a length of reinforced piano wire. "Consider this a forced early retirement."

As Valentina's terrified screams were abruptly cut short by the tightening cord, Vance walked over to the bedroom window, peering out toward the vineyard with a pair of thermal binoculars. A faint, triumphant smirk curled the corner of his mouth as he spotted three heat signatures moving toward the abandoned greenhouse.

"Found you," Vance whispered to himself.
