Chapter 6 - Protocol Omega

The blue glow of the bunker monitors curdled into a sickly, pulsing crimson as Protocol Omega took effect. The cooling fans of the server racks screamed into a high-pitched whine, blowing a wave of hot, ozone-scented air across the room.

"What is that?" Sophia demanded, stepping closer to the glass screen as encrypted code cascaded down the display like digital blood. "Is it self-destructing?"

"Worse," Elena muttered, her face draining of color as she tapped furiously on her tactical tablet, trying to bypass the firewall. "It's a decentralized wipe protocol. But it's not erasing data—it's transmitting it. Every asset, every shell company, every black-market ledger is being broadcast directly to a dead-man's switch controlled by the syndicate's Supreme Council in Zurich. They're burning their own house down so no one else can inherit the ashes."

Lorenzo stepped beside her, his sharp eyes scanning the cascading data streams. "Can you trace the destination IP?"

"It’s bouncing through twelve proxy servers in real time," Elena replied, her teeth clenched in frustration. "By the time we isolate the node, the data packet will have dissolved into the dark web."

Suddenly, the greenhouse doors above them creaked open. Heavy, synchronized footsteps crunched across the shattered glass on the floor.

"Get behind the server rack, now!" Lorenzo hissed, shoving Sophia and Lily into the narrow recess behind the primary mainframe, while Elena and Lorenzo drew their weapons, taking defensive positions on either side of the ladder.

A shadow fell over the hatch. A gloved hand dropped a small, cylindrical metal canister down into the bunker.

"Gas!" Elena yelled, kicking the canister away just as a dense, sweet-smelling white vapor hissed into the air, instantly filling the subterranean space with thick, choking fog.

Before they could react, a deep, synthesized voice boomed from a portable speaker dropped through the hatch.

"Mr. Moretti, Miss Vance, and Mrs. Hale," the mechanical voice echoed, smooth and dripping with aristocratic menace. "You have played a magnificent game of chess. But you are playing on a board you do not own. The Moretti estate was never yours, Lorenzo. It was merely a holding pen."

Through the haze of the gas, a figure in a tailored trench coat dropped silently into the bunker. Before Elena could raise her weapon, the figure moved with terrifying, preternatural speed, striking the back of her neck with a precise nerve-strike. Elena crumpled to the concrete floor, unconscious.

Lorenzo lunged forward, throwing a vicious right hook, but the intruder ducked effortlessly, sweeping Lorenzo’s legs out from under him and pinning him to the ground with a steel-toed boot pressed firmly against his windpipe.

"Pathetic," the intruder whispered, removing a sleek silver mask to reveal the smiling, unlined face of a man who looked remarkably young, yet possessed eyes that looked ancient and cruel. It was Julian Vane, the youngest billionaire member of the European Energy Commission and one of Lorenzo’s closest board advisors.

"Julian... you?" Lorenzo choked out, gasping for air beneath the boot. "You're the head of the syndicate?"

"I am the architect, Lorenzo," Julian smiled warmly, adjusting his silk tie. "And unfortunately, your little housekeeper’s heroics have forced our hand. We can no longer maintain the illusion of corporate legitimacy."

Julian turned his gaze toward the server rack where Sophia and Lily were hiding in the shadows. He pulled a small, golden detonator from his pocket.

"Mrs. Hale, step out slowly," Julian called out, his voice smooth as silk. "Or I press this button, and the entire vineyard—including this cute little girl—becomes a smoking crater."
