Chapter 2 - Blood in the Ledgers

The shockwave of the blast reverberated through the Moretti family catacombs, but Sophia didn't hesitate. Shoving Lily into the damp, narrow recess behind the confessional wood panels, she pulled the hidden latch. Pitch blackness enveloped them, smelling of wet earth and centuries of dust.
"Keep your eyes closed, baby, and hold my hand tight," Sophia whispered fiercely, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at her to look back, to see if Lorenzo had survived the opening volley, but survival demanded tunnel vision.
Back in the main chapel, Lorenzo didn't flinch as the tactical commander’s rifle barrel hovered inches from his heart. Years of surviving hostile corporate takeovers had taught him that men with guns were often just proxies for men with checkbooks.
"Who pays your retainer?" Lorenzo asked smoothly, his voice dangerously calm as he slowly slipped his left hand into his trench coat pocket, his fingers brushing against a concealed tactical blade he kept for emergencies.
"Dead men don't need accounting, Lorenzo," the commander barked, motioning two operatives forward to sweep the altar. "Secure the ledgers. The syndicate cannot afford for the international shipping routes through the Mediterranean to be audited by a vengeful tycoon—or his overly observant domestic staff."
As the operatives rushed the altar, their boots crushing Valentina's discarded pearl necklace, Lorenzo moved with explosive, calculating violence. He didn't aim for the armed men; instead, he hurled the heavy brass crucifix from the altar directly into the face of the nearest operative, shattering his visor. Simultaneously, he lunged to the side, drawing his blade and severing the power cable of the chapel's massive wrought-iron chandelier.
The multi-ton iron fixture plummeted with a deafening screech, crashing directly between Lorenzo and his attackers, showering the chapel in a blinding cascade of sparks and crushing the second operative's legs beneath heavy metal spikes.
"You're losing your touch!" Lorenzo yelled over the roar of collapsing masonry, sprinting toward the confessional tunnel entrance just as a hail of silenced gunfire chewed the stone wall where his head had been a microsecond prior.
He dove headfirst into the darkness of the tunnel, slamming the heavy stone counter-weight behind him. The thick concrete barrier sealed shut with a hydraulic click, muffling the frustrated shouts and gunfire of the mercenaries on the other side.
Inside the subterranean crawlspace, Lorenzo coughed violently, dragging himself forward in the pitch black until his hand brushed against a small, trembling shoulder.
"Mr. Moretti?" Sophia’s breathless voice whispered from the dark. "Are you hit?"
"I'm fine," Lorenzo panted, pressing his back against the cold stone wall. He clicked on his smartphone flashlight, illuminating Sophia’s soot-stained face and Lily’s wide, terrified eyes. "But we are no longer safe anywhere on this estate. They aren't just trying to recover stolen files. They are wiping out witnesses."
"Then we don't go to the stables," Sophia said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous clarity that surprised even Lorenzo. "Valentina keeps a private off-grid server in the old greenhouse near the vineyard. My husband—before he disappeared—used to do maintenance there. There are logs going back five years that show every name connected to the child-trafficking ring she’s running."

Lorenzo stared at his housekeeper, a profound shift occurring behind his sharp, analytical eyes. For three years, she had been invisible to him—just another uniform cleaning up his opulent mess. Now, she was the key strategist in a war for their lives.
"Show me the way," Lorenzo said.
