Chapter 21 - The Unseen ArchitectThe morning sun cast a sharp, geometric shadow across the drafting tables of Bradley & Son Structural Design. I stood over a sprawling blueprint of Nashville’s upcoming civic transit hub, a multi-million-dollar municipal project we had secured last month against stiff corporate competition.

My lead associate, a brilliant young structural engineer named Maya Lin, walked over with a fresh cup of black coffee and placed a thick manila folder next to my coffee mug.

“Connor, the city zoning board just cleared the final environmental impact report for the east wing,” Maya said, her eyes bright with professional satisfaction. “There’s just one minor hiccup. The historical preservation committee is requesting an audit of the land title history because a portion of the site used to belong to an old shell corporation tied back to T&M Holdings.”

My hand paused over the drafting pen. Even though Teresa was locked away in a federal correctional facility in West Virginia, her corporate ghost still occasionally haunted the municipal registries of Tennessee.

“T&M Holdings was dissolved by federal court order eighteen months ago during the asset liquidation,” I replied calmly, adjusting my glasses. “Every deed, title, and parcel was cleared and transferred to our corporate trust or returned to the municipal reserve. Who flagged it?”

“A compliance officer named Julian Cross,” Maya said, sliding a business card across the desk. “He mentioned he used to work for the state land registry before transitioning to private consulting. He specifically asked to meet with you, Connor. Privately.”

A slight chill ran down my spine. In my line of work, coincidences were rarely accidental; they were stress fractures waiting to expose hidden weaknesses.

“Call him back, Maya,” I instructed, my voice steady. “Tell him I’ll meet him at the site office on 4th Street tomorrow morning at eight sharp. Let’s see what kind of structural integrity Mr. Cross actually has.”
