Chapter 8 - Midnight at the Construction SiteThe skeletal steel frame of the twenty-story commercial tower rose like a giant shadow against the midnight Nashville sky. Cold wind whipped through the open concrete floors, carrying the scent of damp cement and raw iron.

I stood alone on the fifth floor, illuminated only by the pale glow of a single work light and the distant neon signs of the city.
Footsteps echoed sharply against the concrete stairs.
A figure emerged from the stairwell, breathing heavily. It was David. In his hand, he clutched a heavy metal wrench he must have picked up from the tool shed downstairs. His eyes were wild, devoid of the friendly mentor facade he had worn for years.
“You stupid, arrogant kid,” David snarled, stepping out of the shadows. “Why couldn't you just keep your head down and let your mother handle the house? Why did you have to bring the police into this?”
“You embezzled millions from my company, framed me, and used my mother to enslave my wife and poison my son,” I said, stepping forward from the darkness. “Did you really think I’d just walk away?”
David laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Who do you think the police are going to believe? A disgruntled employee whose mother testified that he forged the company documents? I already uploaded the final fake ledger under your login credentials ten minutes ago. You're ruined, Connor. Finished!”
“Are you sure about that, David?” a calm voice echoed from the shadows behind him.
Officer Vance stepped out, flanked by three federal agents in tactical gear, their body cameras flashing with red recording lights. Simultaneously, Elena stepped out from the elevator shaft holding a live tablet displaying the real-time wire transfer logs.
