Chapter 26 - The Trap SprungMarcus Vance’s hand drifted instinctively toward his jacket pocket, but before he could make a move, local deputy sheriffs swarmed around him, pressing him against the hood of his sedan and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“Marcus Vance, you’re under arrest for impersonating a federal officer, mail fraud, and executing forged legal instruments,” the senior deputy announced, patting him down and retrieving a burner smartphone and a portable document printer from his briefcase.
Julian Cross walked up the path, handing me a freshly printed digital tablet.
“Good catch, Mrs. Bradley,” Julian nodded respectfully toward Amy. “We suspected Marcus was part of the Chicago syndicate working behind the scenes to rescue the hidden offshore accounts your mother left behind. When he filed that fake foreclosure notice in an unmonitored district court, our automated compliance system flagged the digital signature as a match to the corporate alias V. Sterling.”
I exhaled a long, heavy breath, walking over to Amy and gently wrapping my arm around her and our sleeping son. The tension that had gripped my shoulders finally dissolved into a profound sense of vindication.

“So this was never about our house,” I realized aloud, looking at Julian. “This was their last-ditch effort to scare us into dropping the investigation into the Chicago accounts before federal regulators could freeze them completely.”
“Precisely,” Julian confirmed. “And thanks to this arrest, federal cyber units have just traced the origin of the syndicate’s primary server directly to an executive office in Chicago—owned by a silent partner who funded your mother’s entire operation from day one.”
