Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room RevelationThree days later, the sterile smell of the pediatric ward replaced the tension of the police station. Frederick’s fever had finally broken, thanks to the prompt medical intervention of the paramedics I had called during the party. He was sleeping peacefully in his crib, a small smile playing on his lips.

Amy sat on the hospital bed, eating a warm, nourishing meal brought in by the hospital cafeteria. For the first time in months, her eyes held a spark of life.
“The police called,” I said softly, sitting on the edge of the mattress and taking her hand. “They recovered three of our bank accounts. The court issued an emergency restraining order against my mother, Mason, and all the relatives who participated in the cover-up.”
Amy looked down at her wedding ring, her voice quiet. “Connor... your family... they’ll never forgive you. They’re going to say terrible things about you online, in the community...”
“Let them,” I interrupted, kissing her knuckles. “My only family right now is sitting right here in this room. Everything else was just noise and theft.”
Just then, my phone buzzed with an urgent notification. It was an email from my company’s legal department, forwarded by our family lawyer.
I opened it, and my eyes widened. It contained a confidential investigative report regarding my father’s estate—who had passed away five years before, leaving behind a massive life insurance policy and a commercial real estate portfolio that Teresa had claimed went bankrupt.
According to the legal audit, the properties never went bankrupt. Teresa had forged my dead father’s signature to transfer everything into her sole possession the week after he died, cutting me out completely.

And worse? There was another name listed as a co-beneficiary on the secret offshore trust account.
It wasn't Mason. It was someone I never, ever expected.
