Chapter 6 - The Uninvited VisitorThe hospital door clicked open softly. I expected it to be the nurse coming in to check Frederick’s IV drip, but instead, a tall, impeccably dressed woman stepped inside.

She wore dark sunglasses, a designer trench coat, and carried a leather briefcase. When she pulled down her glasses, Amy gasped.
It was Elena Vance—not the police officer, but a high-profile corporate forensic investigator specializing in estate fraud and hidden trusts, whom my firm’s CEO had secretly recommended to me after hearing about the police raid.
“Mr. and Mrs. Bradley, I apologize for the intrusion,” Elena said smoothly, stepping further into the room and closing the door behind her. “I didn't want to wait until morning to share what we found on your mother’s offshore digital drives.”
“What is it?” I asked, standing up.
Elena placed a certified financial printout on the bedside table. “Your mother’s scheme was much larger than just stealing your monthly transfers and forging the deed to your house. For the past five years, she has been operating a sophisticated asset-stripping syndicate across three states.”
She pointed to a highlighted line at the bottom of the document.
“When we cracked the encryption on her primary offshore account, we traced the origin of the initial seed money used to buy her luxury lifestyle back in 2021. It didn't come from your father’s estate sale. It came from a corporate account belonging to the construction firm where you work.”
My heart skipped a beat. “My company? But I’m just a senior engineer.”
“Correction,” Elena said, her eyes locking onto mine. “You were set up to take the fall for a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme that your mother and a silent partner inside your company engineered. Your mother’s plan wasn't just to steal your house—it was to frame you for corporate fraud so she could inherit your remaining assets when you went to prison.”
The room seemed to spin. All the pieces of the puzzle clicked into place: why my boss had suddenly been auditing my project files last month, why strange discrepancies had appeared in my digital signatures, and why Teresa had been so desperate to get me locked away or discredited.
“Who...” my voice cracked. “Who is the partner inside my company?”

Elena flipped the page to reveal a surveillance photograph taken in the lobby of my office building.
The man in the photo shaking hands with Teresa wasn't a stranger. It was David Vance—my direct supervisor, my mentor, and the man who had invited me over for dinner just last week to “discuss my promotion.”
