Chapter 16 - The Tables TurnedEleanor didn't sit in the sleek designer guest chair. Instead, her knees buckled slightly, and she lowered herself awkwardly onto the edge of the velvet seat, her hands trembling in her lap.

"I know... I know I have no right to be here," Eleanor stammered, her voice shaking with humiliation. "We lost everything, Elena. Our apartment is being foreclosed on tomorrow. Sophie and Chloe... they can't even find work because our family name is blacklisted across every industry. We are starving."
I remained silent, letting the heavy weight of her words settle into the room. I picked up a silver pen, rolling it slowly between my fingers.
"When you stood in that dining room a few months ago," I began, my tone calm, measured, and entirely devoid of emotion, "you looked at me and called me your maid. You smiled while your son struck my face. You believed that because I chose to cook your meals and keep your house quiet out of loyalty, I was weak."
Eleanor flinched, squeezing her eyes shut as tears leaked down her wrinkled cheeks. "I was arrogant. I was cruel. I was wrong. Please... just spare us something. Anything."
"I am a fair person, Eleanor," I said, setting the pen down with a crisp click. "I don't operate on petty revenge. I operate on absolute justice."
I slid a single piece of paper across the polished mahogany desk toward her.
Eleanor opened her eyes, looking down at the document with a mixture of fear and desperate hope.
"What is this?" she whispered.
"An employment contract," I replied smoothly. "Stark Global’s corporate headquarters and executive residential compounds require maintenance staff, kitchen managers, and custodial coordinators. The positions pay a fair, competitive wage with full benefits."
Eleanor stared at the paper in absolute horror. "You... you want me to be a maid?"
May you like
"Not a maid, Eleanor," I corrected her gently, standing up from my desk and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the empire that bore my family name. "An employee. You will start at the bottom, exactly where you tried to force me. You will work for your living, earn your keep, and learn what dignity actually means."
Eleanor stared at the contract, her chest heaving as the final remnants of her aristocratic pride shattered into dust.
