Chapter 1 - The Iron Trap
"What kind of provisions?" I whispered, my voice trembling against the cold oxygen tube still hooked to my nose.
Jonathan Mercer pulled a thick, leather-bound folder from his briefcase and laid it gently over my lap. "Twenty-two years ago, when your grandfather William Hart watched you fall in love with Flynn Vance, he saw something in that young man that you were too blinded by affection to notice. He saw an opportunist. A man who measured love in stock options and power."
Jonathan turned the page, pointing to a single paragraph highlighted in red ink.
"Your grandfather created the William Hart Family Protection Trust to fund Flynn’s startup, Vance Enterprises. Flynn believed he was receiving an anonymous venture capital backing. In reality, eighty percent of Flynn’s business was built on Hart money. But William added a trigger clause: Spousal Abandonment During Extreme Incapacity."
"What does that mean?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"It means," Jonathan said, a razor-sharp smile cutting across his aged face, "that if Flynn ever attempted to dissolve your marriage or strip you of your marital rights while you were in a life-threatening medical state, the entire ownership structure of Vance Enterprises instantly forfeits. Every share, every asset, every deed, and every bank account registered under his name automatically reverts to you and your newborn children."
Jonathan leaned closer, his eyes cold and unwavering. "Flynn didn't just sign a divorce document outside your ICU room, Claire. He signed his own total financial execution. As of twenty minutes ago, Flynn Vance owns nothing. Not his company, not his penthouse, and not even the clothes on his back."

I closed my eyes as tears finally spilled over, not from grief, but from the realization that my grandfather’s love had reached out from beyond the grave to shield me.
"Call the hospital security," I said, opening my eyes with a chilling calmness I had never felt before. "I want Flynn banned from this floor. And then, Jonathan... take everything from him."
