Chapter 9 - Begging in the Dust

"This is a forgery!" Marcus shrieked, his face turning bright red as he backed away from the podium. "She tampered with the files!"
"The digital signatures were verified by federal forensic auditors two hours ago, Mr. Vance," the judge barked.
Before Marcus could speak again, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open. Six federal agents in suits walked down the aisle, carrying arrest warrants.
"Flynn Vance and Marcus Vance," the lead agent announced, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
Panic erupted in the gallery. Camera flashes went off like lightning strikes.
Flynn scrambled out of his seat, knocking his chair over. He looked around wildly, realizing his uncle had already been handcuffed. Desperate, Flynn broke away from the officers and fell to his knees in front of my desk, grabbing the edge of my coat.
"Claire! Please!" Flynn sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks, his handsome face completely ruined by terror. "I was manipulated! Marcus forced me to do it! He told me you were going to leave me! I loved you, Claire! Think of our babies! Please don't let them take me!"
I looked down at the man I had once given my heart to. I felt no anger. I felt no pity. I only felt an icy, absolute clarity.
I leaned down and pulled my coat out of his trembling hands.

"You signed the divorce outside the ICU, Flynn," I whispered so only he could hear. "You told the nurse you were done with me. Now... I am done with you."
The federal agents grabbed Flynn by his arms, dragging him kicking and screaming out of the courtroom while cameras caught every second of his pathetic breakdown.
