Chapter 15 - The Desperate Dog

Midnight. Rain poured down heavily against the bulletproof glass of my private sanctuary in the countryside. The children were asleep under the guard of twenty heavily armed private military contractors.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the glass conservatory near the back gardens. Security alarms blared.

"Informer at the perimeter!" David yelled into his radio, pulling his weapon. "Team Alpha, move in!"

"Wait!" I held up my hand, watching the security monitors.

Through the infrared cameras, a single drenched figure crawled across the muddy lawn toward the house, dragging his left leg. He was bleeding from a gunshot wound in his shoulder.

It was Flynn.

He wasn't dressed in his expensive suit anymore. He looked like a dying dog, covered in mud, terror etched into every line of his face.

"Hold your fire!" I ordered David. "Bring him inside."

Minutes later, Flynn was thrown onto the marble floor of my drawing room, coughing up blood. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with hysterical panic, trembling uncontrollably.

"Claire... please..." Flynn choked out, reaching toward me with blood-stained hands. "You have to help me! She's going to kill me!"

"Why should I help the man who left me to die while I gave birth?" I asked, sitting calmly in an armchair above him, holding a glass of scotch.

"I didn't know!" Flynn wept, pressing his forehead against the cold tile. "Evelyn... she set me up! She told me five years ago that if I signed those divorce papers, she would give me fifty percent of her international trust! But she used me! She brought me out of prison just to use my identity to execute the stock raid! When your self-destruct protocol wiped out her billions tonight, she realized I was useless... she sent her assassins to eliminate me!"
