Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

Flynn thought he could use my children as leverage to force me into a settlement. He believed that a mother recovering from near-death would break under the threat of losing her babies. He had no idea who he was truly dealing with.
Three days later, against my doctor's strict orders, I discharged myself from the hospital.
Dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that hid my surgical bandages, my hair styled impeccably, I walked into the headquarters of Vance Enterprises. Flanking me were Jonathan Mercer and a team of six high-powered litigation attorneys.
The glass doors of the executive boardroom swung open. Inside, Flynn sat at the head of the long oak table, surrounded by the board of directors. He looked haggard, his suit wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot from spending the last seventy-two hours in a cheap hotel.
"Claire?" Flynn gasped, leaping to his feet. The board members turned in shock, murmuring among themselves.
"Sit down, Flynn," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a diamond blade. "You're sitting in my chair."
"This is ridiculous!" Flynn shouted, looking around at the board. "Gentlemen, don't listen to her! She suffered severe hypoxia during labor! She's suffering from postpartum psychosis! She isn't capable of making logical decisions!"
I walked slowly to the head of the table, placing both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning down until I was inches from Flynn's pale face.
"On Tuesday at 2:14 AM, my heart stopped for four minutes," I said quietly, every word dropping like lead. "While doctors were pounding on my chest to bring me back so I could raise our children, you were standing in the hallway signing a waiver to revoke my medical insurance and filing for an immediate divorce."
Gasps erupted around the table. Several board members looked at Flynn with disgust.
"I didn't— that was a routine legal update!" Flynn stuttered, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade.

"It was an execution attempt," I corrected. "And unfortunately for you, my grandfather foresaw your cowardice."
Jonathan stepped forward and handed copies of the trust execution orders to every director. "As of this morning, Claire Hart holds eighty-two percent of voting shares in Vance Enterprises. By unanimous power of attorney, Flynn Vance is hereby removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."
