Chapter 5 - The Public Execution

Flynn’s attorney, a ruthless man named Marcus Vance—Flynn's uncle—stood up abruptly. "This is an illegal hostile takeover! You cannot strip a founder of his rights without a court hearing! We will fight this in the press, Claire! We will ruin you!"

I smiled, a cold, empty expression that sent a shiver down Marcus's spine.

"You want to go to the press, Marcus? Be my guest," I said. "Because at six o'clock tonight, national media outlets will receive the security footage from the ICU hallway. They will watch Flynn sign those papers while emergency medical staff rush past him with defibrillator paddles. They will see him hand the clerk a document requesting my life support be limited if complications arose."

Flynn turned white as chalk. "You... you don't have that."

"I own the hospital, Flynn," I replied smoothly. "My grandfather built the Hart Pediatric Wing ten years ago. Did you really think the staff wouldn't record every breath you took near my room?"

Flynn fell back into his chair as if he had been struck by lightning. The board members began gathering their papers, deliberately turning their backs on him as they exited the room one by one.

"You can't do this to me, Claire," Flynn whimpered, his bravado completely crumbling. "We built a life together! What about our home? What about my reputation?"

"You traded your home for a signature," I said, leaning down close to his ear. "And as for your reputation? You haven't seen the worst of it yet."

I walked out of the boardroom, leaving him alone in the dark glass tower he thought he owned. But as I stepped into the elevator, Jonathan’s phone rang. He listened for a moment, his expression darkening.

"Claire," Jonathan whispered, hanging up. "We have a problem. Flynn’s uncle Marcus didn't just file for custody of the twins. He just submitted a court-ordered blood sample request. He claims Flynn isn't the biological father of the children."
