Chapter 7 - The Grandfather's Secret Safe

While waiting for the expedited DNA results, Jonathan and I drove to the main branch of the Hart Private Bank. Deep within the underground vault sat William Hart's master safe—a heavy steel box that had remained unopened since his death three years prior.
"Your grandfather left strict instructions," Jonathan said, inserting a silver key into the lock while I entered the six-digit combination my grandfather had taught me as a child. "This box was only to be opened if Flynn Vance ever executed a divorce."
The heavy vault door clicked open. Inside lay a single leather journal and a black USB drive labeled THE VANCE FILE.
I took the drive, my hands shaking slightly, and plugged it into Jonathan's laptop. A video file automatically began playing.
The screen lit up, revealing my grandfather sitting in his library, looking tired but sharp.
"Claire, my sweet girl," William’s voice resonated through the vault. "If you are watching this, then Flynn has made his choice. I am so sorry you had to endure his betrayal, but I need you to understand something. Flynn Vance did not enter your life by accident."
I gasped, holding my breath.
"Twenty-five years ago," William continued, "Flynn’s father, Arthur Vance, attempted to ruin our family through corporate espionage and embezzlement. When Arthur failed, he went to prison and took his own life. Flynn grew up believing I destroyed his father. He sought you out in college, Claire. His entire romance with you was a calculated revenge scheme to marry into the Hart fortune and strip it away piece by piece."

Tears blurred my vision as the truth crashed over me. My entire marriage—every smile, every anniversary, every soft word Flynn had ever spoken to me—was a lie.
"But I knew," William's video self smiled faintly. "I let him marry you, Claire, because I knew he was weak. I built a legal maze around him. And I left behind the ultimate piece of evidence that will lock Flynn and his uncle Marcus away forever."
