Chapter 19 - The Redemption of a Coward

"Flynn!" I gasped, holding his shoulders as he choked on his own blood.

"I... I signed those papers five years ago..." Flynn whispered, his eyes wide and fading fast, tears mixing with the blood on his cheeks. "I was a monster, Claire... I wanted to be a man... but I was just a coward... let me save them... just once..."

With his final burst of strength, Flynn reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small electronic drive he had secretly stolen from Evelyn's briefcase during his escape. He shoved it into my hand.

"The detonator override code..." Flynn gasped, his head falling back against the stone floor. "Protect... our... babies..."

His hand went limp. Flynn Vance was dead.

"Flynn!" Evelyn screamed from across the room, realizing her leverage was gone.

I didn't hesitate for a single second. I jammed the override drive into my tactical tablet, slammed the override command, and neutralized the explosive circuit board in the basement.

"David! Take her!" I commanded.

My security team swarmed the room. Evelyn fired twice, but David’s team overwhelmed her, tackling her to the ground and wrenching the gun and detonator from her hands.

Evelyn lay pinned against the dusty floor, screaming hysterically as plastic flex-cuffs were bound tightly around her wrists.

I walked over to her, stepping around Flynn’s motionless body, and stood directly over my half-sister.

I didn't strike her. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked down at her with absolute triumph.

"You thought my grandfather left you nothing, Evelyn," I said quietly, pulling out a sealed envelope from my jacket that Jonathan had pulled from the family vault hours earlier. "You were wrong."
