Chapter 6 - Checkmate in the Rain“Touchting. Truly touching,” Richard sneered, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of the hunting rifle. Water dripped from the brim of his expensive cashmere coat, but his expression was entirely devoid of human emotion. “The stray cat and the lost kitten, reunited just in time to die together.”

Emily scrambled to shield her mother, her belly heavy, her eyes blazing with fury. “You’re a monster, Richard! The police are already on their way. My father’s corporate security team traced my phone—they’ll be here any minute!”
Richard laughed loudly, a chilling sound that echoed across the estate grounds. “Your father’s security team? My dear wife, do you really think I didn’t cut the communication lines before I rigged that chandelier? There is no signal for miles. And as for the police... well, local jurisdictions take hours to reach a private estate in upstate New York. By the time they arrive, there will simply have been a tragic double fatality during a botched robbery by a rogue housekeeper.”
He raised the barrel of the rifle, aligning the scope directly between Elena’s eyes.
“Any last words, Mother-in-Law?” Richard mocked. “Or should I say, annoying domestic pest?”
Elena didn’t flinch. Instead, a strange, serene smile touched the corners of her lips. She slowly stood up, placing herself squarely between the rifle barrel and her pregnant daughter.

“You arrogant fool,” Elena said softly, her voice carrying an eerie calmness. “You spent six weeks watching me clean your crystal and fold your clothes. Did you ever wonder why I never asked about your company accounts?”
Richard’s smirk faltered slightly for a split second. “What are you talking about?”
