Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Cell BlockDeep inside the gray, concrete bowels of the federal penitentiary, Richard paced his six-by-eight-foot cell like a caged beast. The silence was deafening, broken only by the distant clanking of iron doors and the echoing shouts of guards.

His expensive Italian leather shoes were long gone, replaced by coarse canvas prison slippers. His tailored suit had been traded for an institutional orange jumpsuit that felt like sandpaper against his skin.
“Hey, Sterling! You’ve got a visitor at the glass,” a guard sneered, banging a nightstick against the rusted bars of cell 404.
Richard’s heart leaped with desperate hope. A lawyer, he thought. A loophole. Someone must have found a way out.
He rushed to the visitation booth, his hands trembling as he picked up the heavy plastic receiver. On the other side of the reinforced glass sat Marcus, his former enforcer, wearing an identical orange uniform. Marcus’s face bore the purple bruise of Elena’s takedown.
“Marcus! You lying coward, did you bring the appeal papers?” Richard hissed into the intercom, pressing his face against the glass.
Marcus didn’t smile. He just stared back with dead, hollow eyes. “There are no papers, Richard. And there is no appeal.”
“What are you talking about? I paid you a fortune!” Richard shrieked, slamming his palm against the glass partition.

“You paid me with embezzled money that the feds already seized,” Marcus muttered coldly. “And by the way... the prosecutor offered me a full deal if I handed over the digital ledgers of your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. I gave them everything, Richard. You’re entirely on your own.”
The receiver slipped from Richard’s numb fingers, clattering against the metal shelf as his world finally, irrevocably collapsed.
