Emily dropped to her knees in the mud, tears streaming down her face as decades of emptiness suddenly flooded with blinding light. “You... you’re my mother?” she sobbed, the word tearing from her soul.
Elena dropped beside her, pulling her daughter into her arms, pressing her face against Emily’s damp hair as uncontrollable sobs racked her body. “My baby... my sweet Elena... I found you. After thirty-one years, I finally found you.”
For a brief, suspended moment, the horror of the house, the murder attempt, and the torrential rain vanished. A mother and daughter reunited in the mud, bound by blood and survival.
