Chapter 13 - Shadows from the PastBack at the Whitmore estate, the evening shadows stretched long across the manicured lawns. Inside the sprawling library, Elena stood before a massive oak bookshelf, sliding back a false panel that revealed a hidden wall safe.

Emily walked in, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea, her eyes filled with curiosity. “Mom? What is that?”

Elena turned around, holding a heavy, leather-bound journal with yellowed, frayed pages. The cover bore a faded gold monogram that matched the crest of the ancestral Whitmore family.

“This, my sweet girl, is the truth about why your life was targeted long before Richard ever entered the picture,” Elena said softly, motioning for Emily to sit on the velvet sofa.

Emily’s breath hitched. “What do you mean? I thought Richard only targeted me for the family fortune.”

“Money was his motive, yes. But the opportunity? That was engineered by someone else,” Elena explained, flipping open the journal. “Thirty-one years ago, when you were stolen from the hospital in Burlington, it wasn’t a random kidnapping. It was orchestrated by Richard’s uncle, Victor Sterling, who wanted to merge our family’s shipping empire with his own failing firm.”

Emily stared at the pages in stunned disbelief. Names, dates, and bank transfers were meticulously documented in Elena’s precise handwriting—evidence she had spent three decades gathering across three different countries.

“Victor died years ago,” Emily whispered.

“He did,” Elena nodded grimly. “But Richard inherited his uncle’s journals, his ambitions, and his ruthlessness. When Richard married you, he thought he was simply finishing the family business.”

Elena closed the journal, her eyes locking onto her daughter’s with fierce determination. “And now, we are going to finish them.”
