Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Fosters

The ballroom of the Grand Regency was filled with San Antonio’s elite. Crystal chandeliers threw brilliant light over hundreds of guests. At the center stage stood Brenda Foster, wearing a sparkling gold gown, holding a glass of champagne alongside Andrew and Gemma.
"To new beginnings!" Brenda announced into the microphone, her voice booming through the speakers. "And to the union of two people who truly understand loyalty and success!"
The crowd clapped politely. Gemma beamed, holding up her ring finger, while Andrew stood beside her looking pale, nervously sipping his drink.
Suddenly, the heavy doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
The room fell dead silent as Zachary Howard walked in, tux-clad and commanding. And walking arm-in-arm with him was me.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
"Is that... Dr. Miller?" someone whispered. "I thought she suffered a mental breakdown!" another guest murmured.
Brenda’s face flushed bright red as she grabbed the microphone tighter. "What is she doing here? Security! Remove these intruders!"
"No need for security, Mrs. Foster," Zachary's voice boomed as he pulled a remote control from his pocket and pressed a button.
The massive projector screens behind the stage suddenly lit up. Instead of the slide show of Andrew and Gemma's photos, the screens displayed high-definition bank transfer ledgers, federal seizure warrants, and the recorded video footage of Gemma bribing the hospital clerk.
The entire ballroom erupted into shock and whispers.
Gemma screamed, dropping her champagne glass, which shattered on the stage floor. "Turn it off! Turn it off!"
"Brenda Foster, Andrew Foster, and Gemma Salas," Zachary spoke calmly, his voice echoing over the quiet room. "You are being formally served with federal indictments for wire fraud, identity theft, corporate espionage, and illegal money laundering."
At that exact moment, four uniformed FBI agents and two local police officers walked past Zachary and stepped onto the stage.
Andrew immediately burst into tears, dropping to his knees. "It was my mother! It was all my mother and Gemma! I didn't know about the laundering! Sam, save me!"
Brenda tried to slap the handcuffs away from the officer's hands, cursing loudly as her gold dress caught on the stage microphone, sending it crashing down with a deafening screech. Gemma tried to run out through the back kitchen doors, but two female officers caught her at the threshold, forcing her hands behind her back.
I walked slowly toward the stage, stopping just a few feet from where Andrew was being cuffed.
He looked up at me, tears streaming down his pathetic face. "Sam... please... tell them I'm a good guy..."
I looked down at him, feeling no anger anymore—only complete, liberating pity.
"You told me I was always saving someone, Andrew," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly to every shocked guest in the room. "And you were right. But tonight, I finally saved myself."
As the police led the three of them out of the ballroom in handcuffs through a gauntlet of flashing news cameras, Zachary stepped up beside me. He offered me his arm with a warm, genuine smile.

"Shall we go, Dr. Miller?" he asked softly. "Paisley is waiting at home, and we have a bright new future to build."
I slipped my hand into his arm, turned my back on the wreckage of my past, and walked out into the light.
